Runtime error 3704 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hello,

I experienced two problems immediately after installation:

1) I installed SQLExcel as administrator, but am running my computer with a normal unprivileged user (of course). Putting the "connectionsettings.xml" in the program folder is really really bad design. This has to be put in the personal user directories, as Microsoft recommends it for several years now...
I added write permission for normal users to that file, but this was apparently not enough to help with the next issue.

2) I get a runtime error 3704 ("Operation not allowed when the object is closed" when I try to add a new connection (which was successfully test before). Doesn't matter whether I try this with my regular account or an account with administrative privileges.

After clicking the error message away in the database connection manager, the complete addin doesn't work anymore - none of the button reacts to a click, the whole buttonbar is useless. I have to restart Excel to make it work again.

The idea of SQLExcel might be nice - but the flaws described above, and found after only a few minutes of testing, give me a really bad feeling. Has a long way to go to be usable, sorry...

Kind regards,
MrBuddha

Hi MrBudha
I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I missed 2 posted messages.. This will not be the case going forward..

Thank you for your feedback.

For the point (1)- with regards to the location of the settings file. It is a good point and thanks. Going forward, I will do all the user testing from a non admin account to be sure this problem does not occur. I will rectify this my moving it to a user folder. I will post back up when it is tested and released.

For the point (2), after you got the runtime error the add-in wont function - so none of the buttons worked. There was a problem in the error handling that was fixed several days ago but only released publicly today. Please can you download the newest version as this should resolve this problem.

The stability of the add-in is my primary focus and I will do everything needed to get this working 100%. Bugs may come up but they will be resolved quickly.

I had to disable public posting due to a problem with spammers but please can you get back to me via the "Contact Us" page to let me know how it went.

Thank very much for your feedback. It is very useful to improve the add-in.

Al

MrBudha, not sure if you are going to see this but for the record, I did the prototype up for moving the setting file into the "My Documents" folder. So this will be released in the next release. I am guessing that will be in around one week from now.
Thanks again for the feedback,
Al
