Any ideas on what good forum categories would be ? 8 Months, 1 Week ago Karma: 1
Hi !

Not sure anyone is interested but if anyone has any input on what good categories for the forum would be it would be great.

Also seems like there are a few issues with this forum. Will take a look at this tomorrow sometimes.

Have a good night. Al

Nobody seems to reply, so I think ill give it a try.

Chronologically we have the installation first. You have that one.
Then you have the use of Excel. I think you have to determine runtime and program errors (1 category), wishlist and new functionality (1 category), SQL help (1 category), Connection and DB problems (1 category) and Other (1 category). Only open Other for a short time to see what sort of questions will be put in there. It shouldn't be a big bin with all sort of questions which should be in other categories.

Then inside connection and DB problems you can specify the specific databases.

Hope this helps you and makes you keep up the good work

Cool thanks Blitzoff..

It is very good to bring it back as having this pretty well set up early on will make it simpler to maintain.

That is very good like that. I added in
- an Excel category(not useful yet but will be when the embedded queries are in the addin),
- a VBA category (again not useful yet but will be soon enough when the vba stuff is in)
- I left in the database specific forums.. I am not sure if this is a good idea but it will help with the search engines - and get more people to come here so I think it is not a bad idea.. But it gives really alot of categories which is bad.. But overall I think good as it will give more users which will make a better tool..

I did up a chart of this so I remember. Please let me know what you think ??? Also, if anyone else has ideas please chime in..

Also, I think it will be better to change the current FAQ (Support Page) to a media Wiki page ?
So for support, there will be
- for general issues - the media wiki to check fist. This will be good as we can have alot more content in a easy to use format.
- the forum for more specific stuff and to post up questions etc..

Thanks very much Blitzoff..
Al

I think its good. Still its difficult. You have to determine if you want those visitors that come to the site because of those categories. If you need them, then you should let it as it is. I think you know exactly what the problem is. More visitors is good, but more categories is bad. Its your choice .

The rest is good i think. Maybe keep track of the sort of questions. If there are many similar, then you can make aditional categories. But, like many things, you have to watch out not to make it too complex for newcomers either.

Very good. That is right.
Have to be careful as it might get too confusing with so many categories..

I will think again !)

Thanks for all the help Bliztoff !

Hey, I thought of the updating thing, but you have no topic about what is the newest version. Like now i have 1.2.43 right? So you gonna do a small update, but how should i know there is a new update? There should be a topic for that + release notes for the new releases.

Hi Blitzoff ! I hope the weekend went fine.

That is a good idea and I added it in. This category can be rolling so we can just keep adding in to it as new versions come out.

I also added in an Excel/VBA category. With the new release, you can embed queries into Excel worksheets so there might be some questions in this area. The embedded queries are not dependent on the add-in and work the same way as they would if you set them up with MS Query.

Also, fyi, I got the fix in for the update check. It seems to be working fine. I left my machine in French settings while making the changes and testing and it is doing fine. So hopefully we are fine on this point. Thanks vm for finding that bug.
See you later,
Al

Thanks ! Yep, weekend was good. I was out for a few too many beers on Sat night so had to take it easy yesterday. But it was good.

That is right. Better to keep with Query for now. But I hope in a few weeks the add-in will be much better for certain tasks. Might take a few more releases but I think it will be better given time. Query is really great but it does not change much and it is not possible to really extend the functionality.

Please let me know how it goes for you. Have a nice evening there and see you later,
Al

Hya Blitzoff !
Just wondering if all went ok with the new version ?
Also, I think it is ok to delete the Latest Release category from the forum. I think the annoucements section up the top of the forum will cover this as it can be used to post up annoucements like new release or upcoming release/testing underway..

Hope all is going great there.
Al
