June 2nd - new version (V1.3) is released. The new version has several bug fixes and also a few good enhancements. This is an Excel for Windows add-in so it wont work on a mac.
Please note: If you decide to install the add-in it would be great if you could provide some feedback - criticisms and suggestions are very welcome. There is a forum to post up issues, questions, suggestions etc. Feedback will help keep the add-in moving forward so please help out with some if you like the add-in. I recently came back from a long distance bicycle tour and decided to do this freeware project while looking for a job. Another thing that would be a big help (if you find the add-in useful...) would be to "tag" a page. Thank You, Al
Please look in "Latest News" towards the right hand side of this page for a short video clip of the add-in. There is one Flash and one Quicktime (mov) demo. You will need the relevent player installed for these demos to work on your machine. - Easy to import data to Excel from SQL Server, MYSQL, Oracle, Sybase, Microsoft Access, FireBird / Interbase, DB2, Excel Workbooks etc. Works with any ODBC compatible data source. Use the add-in to quickly import data and then use Excel's power to analyse it in more detail if needed.
- Data retrieval is fast (very good speed performance..). The add-in is for running data retreivel queries (SELECTS) and is not for running action queries (CREATES, INSERTS, DELETES, UPDATES..).
- Genuine Freeware! NO Ads, NO Spyware, NO Viruses NO Time limits, NO "Phone Home"...
- Small Add-in Size - has small disk and memory footprint. The core DLL of the add-in is around 300k. It wont bog down your Excel like add-ins can sometimes..
- Add-in user interface is implemented via a small toolbar which will be added to your excel. The toolbar wont take up too much space in Excel and you can move it to where you want it. A new feature in this release is the Connection Profile Combobox. So it is possible to select a connection directly from the toolbar and hit the "SQL" button and you will connect to the database and view the available selectable objects in the main SQL Excel Form. If you hit the "SQL" button with the default entry "SQL Excel Toolbar"
you will load the main Form without any connection being opened (use this when you want to set up some new or manage existing connection profiles). - Easy to build complex queries using the visual interface. SQL Excel implements two way query building so you can (i) build queries visually by dragging/clicking and (ii) build queries by manually typing in the SELECT statement. The main form of the add-in incorporates alot of functionality but is still easy to use. The form is a bit too large to show here in entirety but you can see the left hand side of the main form below. The un-show part of the form has the Excel related functionality (where you can specify to include headers, specify Excel formatting etc).
